Atlanta bank’s $52,000 check for homeowners insurance is lost in the mail

An Atlanta-based bank sent a check for more than $52,000 to an insurance company to cover homeowners insurance payments for several of its mortgage customers with escrow accounts.

Fidelity Bank sent the $52,284 on May 23. But, as of Friday, Travelers had not yet received at its Dallas post office box the check.

According to a source, the bank apparently sent the check without any tracking number or certified delivery option. Neither the bank nor the insurance company was aware the payment was not received until alerted by a customer.

Banks regularly use antiquated systems and methods. However, bank officials were slow to respond to customer concerns regarding the payment and blamed their slowness for responding on a pending merger with Ameris Bank.

However, the Fidelity Bank’s recommended action in this instance is to wait to see if Travelers receives the check. At that time, the bank will likely cancel the payment and send via overnight or two-day post.
