For the past two weeks at Shorter, head football coach Phil Jones and coaching staff issued an early — very, very early — wake-up call for the Hawks, who after a disappointing outing last fall is determined to turn things around this year as Shorter celebrates its 10th anniversary of fielding a team.
Georgia State clinched the outright Sun Belt Conference regular season title on Saturday evening with a 66-55 win over Texas State at Strahan Coliseum. It is the Panthers first outright title since the 2000-01 season and clinches GSU the No. 1 seed in the Sun Belt Conference tournament which begins March 13.
The Shaw University Lady Bears held on late in the game to clinch their fourth straight CIAA Tournament Championship on Saturday evening with a 73-70 win over Fayetteville State University. The Lady Bears have not only won four straight tournament titles, but have also won nine of the last 12 tournament championships.
The Winston-Salem State University Rams clawed their way back from a 16-point deficit to secure a spot in Saturday’s CIAA Championship game with a 78-71 win over Johnson C. Smith University. The Rams are slated to take on the Livingstone College Blue Bears in an 8:30 p.m. contest in Time Warner Cable Arena.
CIAA Player of the Year Mark Thomas scored 28 points and Jody Hill added 14 points as Livingstone College survived a late Fayetteville State run for a 79-73 men’s basketball semi-final win at Time Warner Cable Arena on Friday, February 28 to reach the CIAA Tournament finals for the second consecutive year.
