Ossoff, Handel headed to runoff in Sixth District

ATLANTA — Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel are headed to a June 20 runoff. The winner replaces Republican Tom Price, now the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Ossoff notched 48.1 percent of the vote to Handel’s 19.8 percent. Since neither candidate picked up a majority of the ballots cast in the crowded 18-candidate race, the race heads to a runoff.

The result was hardly a shock, except to some reporters. Ossoff collected more than $8 million in campaign donations, mostly from outside the district, as Democrats desperately tried to pick off the seat from the GOP.

Ossoff quickly emerged as the Democratic front-runner, while Republicans only moved toward Handel as Election Day approached.
