Poll shows good news for Isakson

ATLANTA — A new poll shows good news for U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson in his bid for re-election.

The Landmark/Rosetta Stone poll found Isakson, R-Ga., is running away with 52 percent of the vote to 41 percent of voters saying they plan to cast a ballot for Democrat Jim Barksdale. Meanwhile, just 4 percent of the electorate chose Libertarian Allen Buckley; the poll found that 3 or voters remain undecided.

A previous poll found Isakson in the lead but below the 50 percent threshold he needed to avoid a runoff.

“The share of voters who say they will vote for a Libertarian candidate has declined over the final days of the election, with some of those voters choosing between the candidates with a realistic chance to win. Both Trump and Senator Isakson will benefit from that,” Mark Rountree, president of Landmark Communications, said in a statement. “Once the remaining few undecided voters make their choice, Trump will have a shot of crossing the 50 percent mark in Georgia, and barring major last minute changes, Senator Isakson should win without a runoff.”

At the national level, the poll found 49 percent of voters plan to cast ballots for Donald Trump, while Hillary Clinton picked up support from 46 percent of electors. Libertarian Gary Johnson, the only other presidential candidate on the ballot in Georgia has 3 percent of the vote, the poll found.

“Self described independent voters in Georgia have been volatile, but appear to be moving toward Trump in the closing days of the election,” John Garst, president of Rosetta Stone Communications, said in a news release. “Independent voters are giving Trump 50 percent of their vote, with 38 percent to Hillary Clinton.”
