Braves to celebrate Turner Field ‘memories and moments’ during final season
Despite calling it their home for just two decades, the Atlanta Braves will next year celebrate “the memories and moments” they enjoyed at Turner Field.
Next season will mark the Braves’ last at the Downtown Atlanta ballpark. The team is vacating the city for a new stadium currently under construction in the northern suburbs.
For starters, the team will a special jersey patch that fans can also purchase in the gift shop and will be collecting fan memories of The Ted on a special website. They will also host a smattering of pregame ceremonies, a home game countdown clock and limited-edition gate giveaways; more details are expected to be released at a later time.
The Braves are looking to rebound from a dismal 2015 that saw the team post a 67-95 record and finish in fourth place in the National League East. The Braves kick off their 2016 season on April 4 against the Washington Nationals.
The Braves in November 2013 announced they are leaving Turner Field after the 2016 season and relocating to a new stadium in the Cumberland area of Cobb County near Smyrna. When completed, the new stadium and surrounding amenities will include a mix of office space, a hotel and restaurants from some of the city’s top chefs.
The Braves have played in Downtown Atlanta since moving from Milwaukee after the 1965 season. The team has called Turner Field, originally built for the 1996 Olympics, its home since 1997; Georgia State and others are looking to redevelop the site for post-Braves use.
