Ga. Senate to feds: Pass a balanced budget

ATLANTA — The Georgia State Senate has passed a resolution urging the federal government to require a balanced budget.

Senate Resolution 155 passed by a vote of 37 to 17. The resolution urges the federal government to craft a constitutional amendment that would require a balanced budget.

“Until The Constitution requires something different, the federal government will continue its reckless and irresponsible spending,” state Sen. Judson Hill, R-Marietta, said in a statement. “A balanced budget amendment is the only way to ensure that elected officials prioritize spending, and that our government lives within its means.

“It’s up to the states to lead this fight for the American people,” Hill added. “I am proud of the Georgia Senate for taking the necessary steps to end the cycle of perpetual debt and for telling the federal government that enough is enough.”

The state House will now consider SR 155. The state Senate has passed similar measures in 2014 and 2012.
