Mercer’s Alex Lakes Named SoCon Freshman of the Week

MACON, Ga. – Mercer University running back Alex Lakes has been named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week for his performance in Saturday’s 49-0 victory over Stetson, as the league announced its football weekly awards on Monday.

Lakes helped jumpstart the Bears’ rout of Stetson, carrying the ball seven times for 114 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter alone as Mercer raced out to an early 21-0 lead. The redshirt freshman would finish the day with a career-high 151 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, after averaging 11.6 yards per carry in just over two quarters of work.

The Newnan, Ga. native has rushed for a SoCon-leading 337 yards and six touchdowns in his first collegiate season, posting 112.3 yards per game on the year.

He becomes the second Mercer student-athlete and first member of the football team to claim a weekly honor from the Southern Conference, as the University embarked on its first year in the league this fall.

The Bears return to Mercer University Stadium this Saturday, September 20, when they host Ave Maria for a 6 p.m. kick-off. The game will be carried on ESPN3 as well as on New Country 96.5 FM.
