CIAA Recap: Livingstone and Lincoln Sets Pace with Opening Wins as WSSU Marks History

Lincoln University and Livingstone College set the tone for the conference with opening victories on Thursday night.

The Lions defeated Cheyney 30-18 in the “Battle of the Firsts” on national television (ESPN 3). The Blue Bears defeated Millersville 46-44 in comeback fashion in the final ten minutes of the game. On Saturday, Winston-Salem State marked its 400th all-time victory with a 38-7 win over UNC Pembroke while Virginia Union delivered its first shutout since 2011 with a 12-0 win over Siena Heights.

Livingstone 46 – Millersville 44 [ Boxscore ]

The MU Marauders took an early 16-13 lead over Livingstone at halftime and stretched it to 44-26 to start the fourth quarter. The Blue Bears began its rally when Drew Powell threw a 33-yard touchdown to Jalen Hendricks with 10:37 left in the game.

After the two traded possessions, Livingstone stopped the Marauders on a fourth-and-goal on the one-yard line. The Blue Bears encompassed 99 yards in 1:14 to score on a 16-yard connection from Powell to Hendricks.

LC regained possession following a successful on-side kick and scored three plays later with a 25-yard pass to Hendricks. The 42-yard drive in 36 second gave the Blue Bears the final advantage.

With time fleeting, the Marauders 40-yard field goal attempt with nine seconds on the clock sailed wide right.

Drew Powell threw for 256 yards on 18-of29 attempts and ran for 75 yards. Jalen Hendricks was Powell’s best target with 14 receptions for 211 yards and five touchdowns. Kenneth White led all with 16 total tackles.

Winston-Salem State 38 – UNC Pembroke 7 [ Boxscore ]

The Kienus Boulware era of Winston-Salem State football is off to a good start. The #14 WSSU Rams defeated #21 UNC Pembroke 38-7 in Bowman Gray Stadium. The victory marked the program’s 400th all-time win.

WSSU dominated the first quarter enroute to a 21-0 lead. The lead increased to 24-0 by a rare 44-yard field goal by Alejandro Suarez. The feat marked his career best.

On the ensuing play, LJ Stroman of UNCP returned the kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to score the Braves only points of the game.

With a 31-7 lead at intermission, the normally 20-minute half, would get extended to an hour and 15 minutes due to a severe storm with lightning.

The Rams scored once more in the bottom of the third quarter and let its defense preserve the 38-7 victory.

Rudy Johnson connected on 14 of his 22 throws for 122 yards and one touchdown. Phil Sims connected on 10-of-16 for 107 yards. Johnson also led all rushers with 48 yards. Marcel Caver hauled in ten receptions for 154 yards and a score.

Chowan 26 – Fayetteville State 22 [ Boxscore ]

At the conclusion of the weekend, Chowan had two feats to celebrate. On Friday, the Hawks held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its Pond Football Center and on Saturday, Chowan defeated Fayetteville State 26-22 in non-conference action.

Chowan hit the scoreboard first with 4:08 left in the first quarter with a 30-yard field goal by Nick Hahula. The Broncos quickly responded on the following drive to end the first quarter with a 6-3 lead. After the start of the second, Chowan orchestrated a 12-play 53-yard drive which resulted in another field goal and a 6-6 tie that would hold into halftime.

In the third, Fayetteville State would break the tie with a score and point afterwards. Andre Montgomery scampered on a 51-yard run to setup a one yard score by Marquavis Alston. A safety for the Broncos on the next drive would extend the lead to 15-6. After Chowan scored early in the fourth quarter with a two-yard run by Desean Martin, Fayetteville State would respond once again with a 59-yard touchdown pass from Derek Bryant to Ricardo White to up the ante to 22-13.

Antjuan Randall’s 95-yard kick-off return for a touchdown and extra point put Chowan back within two (22-20) with 10:40 left in the game.

Fayetteville State fumbled on the next possession with the Hawks recovering and securing the momentum. Six plays and 69 yards later, Dain McFarland’s four-yard pass to Damian Ellis would seal the deal at 26-22.
