Profiles of Poverty: A Photo Exhibit by St. Vincent de Paul Georgia
ATLANTA — 1.8 million Georgians live in poverty, one of the highest poverty rates in the country. For these individuals, basic necessities like food and shelter are far from guaranteed.
To bring greater awareness to this problem, St. Vincent de Paul Georgia (SVdP) and Georgia Power have launched “Profiles of Poverty,” a photo exhibit that not only illustrates the challenges faced by those living in poverty, but also moments of hope.
The photo gallery will be available for public viewing in the Colony Square Atrium, 1197 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta, from August 5th – 29th, 2014. The exhibit features photos from the state’s most talented photojournalists, including John Glenn, David Tulis, Joeff Davis, Stephen Morton, Chris Hunt and Tim Redman. The group consists of current and former Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Associated Press, Creative Loafing and Atlanta Magazine photographers.
“2014 marks the 100th anniversary of St. Vincent de Paul Georgia and we are pleased to commemorate this milestone with a one-of-a-kind photo exhibit,” said John Berry, CEO and executive director of St. Vincent de Paul. “We hope the gallery will raise awareness around the issue and inspire people to join us in helping break the cycle of poverty in Georgia.”
Following the Colony Square exhibit in August, the Profiles of Poverty gallery will go on a statewide tour, including a stop at the St. Vincent de Paul Celebration of Hope in Action at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in September.

In 2013, SVdP provided nearly $8 million in financial and in-kind assistance to more than 155,000 people, including nearly $8 million in financial and in-kind assistance to those in need. Support is provided through the 10 Thrift Stores, five Family Support Centers and 38 food pantries, which distributed more than 175.5 tons of food in conjunction with the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
