Georgia State Volleyball Announces 2014 Schedule

ATLANTA – With camp set to open in just over a month on Aug. 8, the Georgia State volleyball team, under the direction of first-year head coach Sally Polhamus, announced the 2014 schedule. It features three early-season tournaments and a full slate of 20 Sun Belt Conference matches.

The Panthers will begin the 2014 campaign with tournaments in Birmingham, Ala., Jacksonville, Fla., and Boone, N.C. The season officially gets underway against SE Louisiana on Aug. 29 in Birmingham on the campus of Samford as a part of the UAB/Samford Challenge. The Panthers will be back in action on Aug. 30 on UAB’s campus facing Jacksonville State and UAB.

The home opener and Polhamus’ debut in the GSU Sports Arena will come on Sept. 3, facing Western Carolina at 6 p.m. All home matches during the 2014 season are scheduled for 6 p.m.

“There is no doubt this 30-match schedule will challenge us with 19 matches on the road and only 11 at home,” Polhamus said. “We’ll look to build team chemistry and come together as we play 12 of those first 13 away from home. We are looking forward to the support of the Panther fans for our 11 home games”

Georgia State will then travel to Jacksonville, Fla., Sept. 5-6, for the Jax Marriott Volleyball Classic. The Panthers will take on Jacksonville and Coastal Carolina on Friday, followed by match-ups with Bethune-Cookman and North Florida on Saturday.

A week later the Panthers will travel to new Sun-Belt foe Appalachian State for the Black and Gold Challenge. Georgia State will face the Mountaineers on Sept. 12 in the Sun Belt opener for both teams. On Sept. 13, the Panthers will face Maryland and Radford to conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule.

Georgia State will continue Sun-Belt play on Sept. 19 and 21 at UL Monroe and South Alabama, before returning home to face UALR on Sept. 26.

The Panthers will return to Louisiana and face UL Lafayette on Oct. 2. Georgia State will open October facing South Alabama in the Sports Arena on Oct. 4, followed by a match-up with in-state foe Georgia Southern on Oct. 8.

After a trip to Arkansas to face Arkansas State (Oct. 10) and UALR (Oct. 12), Georgia State will return to Atlanta and square off against Texas State on Oct. 17 and UL Lafayette a week later on Oct. 24.

Georgia State will travel into Alabama to face Troy on Oct. 25 before a Halloween match-up on Oct. 31 with UT Arlington.

The Panthers will open November at Georgia Southern on Nov. 1, then host Arkansas State on Nov. 7 and UL Monroe on Nov. 8. GSU will travel to Texas State (Nov. 14) and UT Arlington (Nov. 16) for its final two conference road games of the season.

Georgia State will close out the regular season for senior weekend on Nov. 21 and 22 facing Troy and Appalachian State.

The Sun Belt tournament is scheduled for Nov. 27-29 on the campus of Texas State in San Marcos, Texas.
