Tea Party candidate defeats Cantor in GOP primary

In a shocker, a Tea Party candidate has knocked off House Majority Leader Eric Cantor during Tuesday’s Republican primary in Virginia.

David Brat, an economics professor, picked off more than 55 percent of the vote in the win, according to The New York Times. Brat faces Jack Trammell, a fellow Randolph-Macon professor, during November’s election.

“Brat ran an aggressive campaign with strong Tea Party support and perhaps some voters felt that Cantor was not doing enough for those in his home district,” USA Today quoted Carl Tobias, a University of Richmond law professor, as saying.

In South Carolina, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican, won a seven-way primary outright.
