Deal, Nunn win in Georgia primaries

Incumbent Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has defeated a pair of challengers in Tuesday’s Republican primary, The Associated Press reported.

Deal will now face Democrat Jason Carter, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, in the November general election. Carter was unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Deal, a former Congressman, faced a challenge from School Superintendent John Barge and former Dalton, Ga., Mayor David Pennington. According to the Secretary of State’s website, Deal had more than 72 percent of the vote with 20 of 159 counties reporting.

In another high-profile race in Georgia, Democrat Michelle Nunn was heading toward victory during Tuesday’s Democratic Senate primary, heading off a challenge from a trio of candidates.

According to the Secretary of State’s office, Nunn picked up more than 75 percent of the vote as of 9:20 p.m. with 20 of 159 counties reporting.

Nunn will face off in November against the winner of the Republican primary. That race, with seven candidates, is too close to call.
