Florida governor vetoes bill for higher speed limits

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has vetoed a bill that would have allowed the Florida Department of Transportation to post higher speed limits on many Florida highways.

Under the measure, Senate Bill 392, Florida would have been the second state east of the Mississippi River, joining Maine, with posted speeds greater than 70 miles per hour.

Sixteen states allow speeds greater than 70, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). But, AAA contends higher speed limits would lead to more crashes on roads throughout The Sunshine State.

“AAA is extremely pleased with the Governor’s decision to veto Senate Bill 392 which would have allowed higher speed limits on Florida roadways,” said Kevin Bakewell, senior vice president and chief public affairs officer for AAA.

“Speed-related crashes are a major contributing factor in traffic crashes including 30 percent of traffic fatalities. Maintaining Florida’s current speed limits will undoubtedly prevent injuries and save lives on our roadways,” Bakewell added. “For citizens and our nearly 100 million annual visitors, the Governor’s action should send a message that safety in Florida is a top priority.”
