Report: Ga. State interested in Turner Field for football

ATLANTA — The president of Georgia State this week express interest in converting Turner Field into a football stadium  after the Atlanta Braves vacate the facility at the end of the 2016 season.

The stadium was built as Olympic Stadium for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Following the games, the stadium was renovated for baseball use.

Olympic Stadium had a footprint more like a football stadium than a baseball stadium,” Georgia State President Mark Becker told 11 Alive. “So I would have to believe that could happen.”

Georgia State currently plays at the Georgia Dome in downtown, which also hosts the Atlanta Falcons. That stadium is also to be replaced after the 2016 season.
