Georgia State’s R.J. Hunter Earns AP All-America Honorable Mention

ATLANTA — Georgia State sophomore R.J. Hunter became the third Panther in program history to earn AP All-America Honorable Mention recognition when honors were announced by the organization on Monday.

On Friday, Hunter was named a finalist for the Lou Henson Award presented annual to the top mid-major play in Division I college basketball. The award is named in honor of Lou Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years.

The two top honors continue a laundry list of awards and recognitions for the sophomore who led Georgia State to 25 wins, a Sun Belt Conference championship and Postseason NIT bid.

Earlier this month, Hunter was named the Atlanta Tipoff Club Georgia Men’s College Player of the Year. He also earned Sun Belt Player of the Year and first-team all-conference honors. It is the second year in a row that Hunter has earned first-team all-conference honors following his play in the Colonial Athletic Association last year.

The sophomore scored a team-high 18.3 points per game, pulling down 4.6 rebounds per contest. He made a school record 100 3-pointers and was among the top-20 in the NCAA in 3-pointers and free throw percentage. He finished the season among the top-10 in a single-season in Georgia State history in points, steals, 3-point field goals, free throws made and free throw percentage.

“I am extremely proud to see R.J. receive all of this recognition for his hard work,” head coach Ron Hunter said. “All coaches want to see their players do great, but as his father, it makes it even a little more special. He had a great season on the court, but I know he wants to push himself and his teammates even further next season.”

Earlier this year, Hunter scored in 1000th career point in just 55 games, the second quickest to reach the milestone in Georgia State history. In just two seasons, his name appears throughout the GSU record book.

Hunter joins Shernard Long (2001) and Thomas Terrell (2002) as Panthers to earn AP All-America recognition.

Last year as a freshman, Hunter was named CAA Rookie of the Year and earned all-freshman honors. As one of just three freshmen in the country to average 17.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, Hunter was also named to the Kyle Macy Freshman All-America team.
