Georgia Senate Passes Bill Revising Functions of Department of Behavioral Health and Disabilities

ATLANTA — The Georgia Senate has passed a measure that revises the functions and responsibilities of the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD).

“The intention of SB 349 is to enhance the quality of the services provided by DBHDD, as well as create a state public safety net program, following the recent transition from institutional care to community care in Georgia,” state Sen. Charlie Bethel, R-Dalton, said in a statement. “These changes are meant to strengthen the methods and delivery of disability services throughout Georgia.”

Bethel, an administration floor leader, sponsored the bill on the behalf of Governor Nathan Deal.

SB 349 amends Georgia code and revises the administration of mental health, developmental disabilities, addictive diseases, and other disability services provided by DBHDD. The bill also establishes governing boards and also clarifies the powers and duties for every community service board (CSB) in the state.

SB 349 now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.
