CIAA Players and Coach of the Week for the week ending Oct. 13, 2013

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN
Bryan Davis – Winston-Salem State Position: OL
Height: 6-3 Weight: 290 Class: Sr. Hometown: Douglasville, GA
Comments: Davis helped guide the WSSU Rams offense to their third straight game of 500+ total yards. The Rams went for 501 yards including a season high 293 rushing yards in WSSU’s 44-17 win over Johnson C. Smith.

RECEIVER
Robert Holland – Chowan Position: WR
Height: 6-2 Weight: 190 Class: Sr. Hometown: Newport News, VA
Comments: Caught seven passes for 100 yards and one touchdown in critical CIAA Northern Division win against Bowie State. Holland leads the Hawks with 51 receptions on the year for a total of 719 yards and eight touchdowns. He leads the league with an average of 119 yards per game and is tied for second in season touchdowns (8).

QUARTERBACK
Rudy Johnson – Winston-Salem State
Height: 6-2 Weight: 185 Class: Jr. Hometown: San Diego, CA
Comments: Johnson finished the day 19 of 25 for 208 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 88 yards and two touchdowns as #16 WSSU defeated Johnson C. Smith, 44-17.

OFFENSIVE BACK
Marquise Grizzle – Shaw Position: RB
Height: 5-7 Weight: 170 Class: So. Hometown: Camden, NC
Comments: Grizzle provided power for the Shaw offense Saturday against Fayetteville State as he amassed 134 yards on 28 carries – good for a 4.8 yards per rush average – in Shaw’s 44-34 win. He also caught three passes for 22 yards.

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN
Shonquez Nelson – St. Augustine’s Position: DT
Height: 6-1 Weight: 290 Class: Sr. Hometown: Lake City, SC
Comments: Nelson collected seven tackles including two sacks, and he also intercepted a pass and ran 27 yards to set up a touchdown in a 21-14 win over Livingstone.

LINEBACKER
Chaz Robinson – St. Augustine’s Position: LB
Height: 5-11 Weight: 220 Class: Sr. Hometown: Hampton, VA
Comments: Robinson tallied a game-high 12 tackles in a 21-14 win over Livingstone. The CIAA tackles leader, he is three tackles away from becoming the school career tackles leader.

DEFENSIVE BACK
Darnell Evans – Shaw Position: DB
Height: 5-7 Weight: 181 Class: Sr. Hometown: Madison, NJ
Comments: Evans powered Shaw past Fayetteville State with three interceptions, including a pick six, and six pass break ups Saturday. Without taking a snap on offense, Evans amassed 293 all-purpose yards on kickoff, punt and interception returns – with 71 of those yards off picks.

ROOKIE
A.J. Gilford – St. Augustine’s Position: QB
Height: 6-2 Weight: 210 Class: R-Fr. Hometown: Savannah, GA
Comments: Gilford passed for two TDs and ran for another in a 21-14 win over Livingstone. His scoring passes were 16 and 28 yards to Brian Richards and he rushed for a six-yard score. He completed 10 of 16 pass attempts for 122 yards, 2 TDs and 0 interceptions. He gained 43 yards on 10 carries.

SPECIALTY
Alejandro Suarez – Winston-Salem State Position: K
Height: 5-6 Weight: 145 Class: Jr. Hometown: Liberty, NC
Comments: Suarez was perfect once again for WSSU as he connected on all six PAT’s in WSSU’s 44-17 win over Johnson C. Smith.

COACH
Robert Massey – Shaw
Comments: Massey held his team together when they were trailing Fayetteville State 17-0 and again when they trailed 31-12. The Bears held FSU to only three points the rest of the way, while Massey’s defense repeatedly gave the offense a short field with three picks in the second half alone.

Notable Performances:

Joshua Stalls, OL, VUU – Led an offensive line which opened holes for Virginia Union runners to amass 359 yards on the ground in VUU’s 28-21 win over The Lincoln University on Saturday. The 62 total carries were the most by a VUU team since the Panthers carried the ball 65 times against Virginia State University in 2009.

Brian Richards, WR, SAU – Grabbed two TD passes in a win over Livingstone. He led the Falcons with five receptions for 66 yards. His TD receptions were 16 and 28 yards.

Maurice Lewis, RB, WSSU – Rushed for 113 yards and one touchdown, while also catching three passes for 14 yards.

DaSean Martin, RB, CU – Had a banner day for the Hawks. He tallied 22 carries for 102 yards on the afternoon, ran for two touchdowns and caught an 18 yard pass for his third score on the day.

Eric Shaw, RB, VUU – Led the Panthers with 116 rushing yards on 22 carries while also scoring a touchdown in VUU’s win over Lincoln on Saturday. Shaw’s 116 yards marked the first time this season a VUU running back has rushed for more than 100 yards in a game.

Roderick Davenport, TB, SAU – Rushed for a season-high 106 yards on 18 carries in a win over Livingstone. He also caught a pass for a two-point conversion.

Jason Ampy, LB, CU – Led all defensive players in the game with nine tackles (four solo, five assisted) and two tackles for loss.

Troy Krepich, K/P, VUU – Had two punts for 81 yards and went 4-for-4 in extra points in VUU’s win over Lincoln on Saturday. Krepich is now 13-for-13 in extra point attempts.

Brion Robinson, DB, LU – Had a game-high 13 tackles to lead the Lions defense.
