MACON, Ga. – After posting a 3-0 record through its opening stretch of non-conference games, the real test begins for the Mercer University football team, when it welcomes the Drake Bulldogs to town Saturday for the Bears’ inaugural Pioneer Football League contest.
Saturday will put a lid on a four game homestand for the Bears and serve as the first afternoon start time for a Mercer squad set to kickoff at 1 p.m.
The Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season last week, using 31 consecutive points to knock off Indianapolis 31-14. Drake is 4-1 in PFL openers under head coach Chris Creighton as the Bulldogs are on a quest for consecutive PFL regular season titles.
Andy Rice leads the offensive attack through the air with 605 passing yards and four touchdowns, while Gary Scott is in firm control of the ground game, averaging 83.0 rushing yards per game and 4.7 yards per carry. The Mercer rushing attack (324.3 yds per game) will meet the third best PFL rushing defense Saturday as the Bulldogs allow just 147.0 rushing yards per contest.
“When you play teams you should beat you want to dominate on the front line and we have done that the last two weeks. We have five guys that have really come together and played well up there,” Mercer Coach Bobby Lamb said. “They know their roles, we know their strengths a little bit better now and know what type plays to run for them.”
