Reports: Former pitcher Pascual Perez killed in home invasion

ATLANTA — Former Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees pitcher Pascual Perez was killed during a home invasion at his house in the Dominican Republic, according to The Associated Press and other outlets.

“We were shocked to hear the news of Pascual Perez’ death earlier today,” Atlanta Braves President John Schuerholz said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during the aftermath of this tragic event. Pascual left his mark with the Braves organization and will always be remembered fondly by Braves fans.”

Perez, 55, compiled a 67-68 record during 11 major league seasons, which also included stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Montreal Expos. He went 15-8 in 1983 and 14-8 the following year, two of his standout seasons.

On Sept. 24, 1988, while with the Expos, Perez threw a five-inning no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies in a game that was called following a 90-minute rain delay.

While with the Braves, Perez missed a start on Aug. 19, 1982, because he was circling the city on Interstate 285 trying to find Fulton County Stadium. Because of the mishap, Perez earned the nickname I-285.
