Cythnia Nelson named field operations manager

Cythnia Nelson has been named field operations manager for the central region of the state. The appointment is effective Oct. 1.

As field operations manager, Nelson will provide operational guidance, coaching and mentoring to the Wardens and Superintendents under her jurisdiction.

“Cynthia has a wealth of experience in various positions within the Department,” Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens said in a news release. “I am confident that her experience will benefit the Wardens and Superintendents in her region.”

Nelson began her career in Corrections as a Correctional Officer at Phillips State Prison. She served as an Associate Counselor, Counselor and Senior Counselor from 1990-97. She was named Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment in 1997 and Deputy Warden of Security in 2001.

Nelson was named Superintendent at Augusta Diversion Center and J.C. Larmore Probation Detention Center before her 2005 appointment as Warden of Autry State Prison. In 2007, she was named Warden at Central State Prison.

Nelson moved into an administrative position in 2009 as assistant director of audits before her promotion to director of audits, where she currently serves.
