Former high school football star to be executed
ATLANTA — A former high school football player is set to be executed April 19 for the 1991 stabbing death of a 19-year-old at a convenience store in Reynolds, Ga.
In September 1991, Daniel Greene went on “a spree of murder and mayhem that covered three counties of rural Georgia,” as a federal appeals court called it.
The spree started on Sept. 27, 1991, when Greene went to the Suwanee Swifty convenience store in Reynolds and threatened at knife point the store clerk; she gave him $142.55. Green then stabbed another man, Bernard Walker, who subsequently entered the store.
Greene then stabbed three others, including an elderly couple in rural Macon County. “Greene knew the couple and had previously worked for them as a farm laborer,” the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals noted in a 2011 opinion.
The former football star also stabbed cashier at a convenience store in Warner Robins.
“Greene confessed to the crimes in a videotaped interview and stated that he had committed the crimes to obtain money for crack cocaine, but Greene later testified that he had no recollection of committing the crimes or of giving a confession,” the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals wrote in its opinion.
Convicted on Dev. 7, 1992, Greene was sentenced to death two days later. His conviction and sentence have been upheld a number of times, and the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this month declined to hear a new appeal.
If he is put to death, Greene would be the 30th inmate executed in Georgia by lethal injection, according to the state’s Department of Corrections.
According to The Telegraph of Macon, the 6-foot-5-inch-tall, 350-pound former football player graduated Taylor County High School in 1990.
