Hudgens: Be sure to insure Valentine’s Day presents

Jewelry for Valentine’s Day is great. Just be sure to insure it.

That’s the message this week from Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph T. Hudgens, who is urging Georgians to update their homeowners policies to include new — and potentially valuable — Valentine’s Day presents given or received this year.

“Diamond bracelets and even engagement rings are common presents received on or around Valentine’s Day,” Hudgens said in a news release. “In the event of a fire or tornado, small items like these are often lost or misplaced. It is best to update your homeowner’s insurance now, in case such an incident later in the year forces you to leave your home suddenly. Also, thieves usually look for jewelry during a break-in.”

Hudgens’ office urges any Georgians with questions about property insurance to contact the Consumer Services Division at (404) 656-2070 or toll-free in Georgia at (800) 656-2298. The office takes calls Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.
