The rundown of Tuesday’s elections

ATLANTA — In addition to Sunday sales and a spate of SPLOST votes, a number of elected officers were on the ballot Tuesday in municipalities throughout Metro Atlanta.

Here is a brief overview of some of the races (this list is by no means comprehensive):

In the Cobb County city of Smyrna, long-time Mayor Max Bacon defeated a pair of challengers — Donna Short Woodham and Alex Backry — to win a fifth term. Elsewhere in the county, Kennesaw Mayor Mark Mathews withstood a challenge from former Mayor Leonard Church, according to the Marietta Daily Journal.

“I’ve always been humbled by growing up here and being the mayor of my hometown,” the Marietta Daily Journal quoted Bacon as saying.

In the DeKalb County city of Dunwoody, Mike Davis and Bob Dallas are headed to a runoff following a race involving a crowded field of four candidates, according to The Dunwoody Crier.

In the Jackson County city of Nicholson, Mayor Ronnie Maxwell defeated a challenge from Lamar Watkins, according to the Athens Banner-Herald.

In the Barrow County city of Winder, City Councilman David Maynard defeated Mayor Chip Thompson.
