Mother to Paper: ‘ I have to kind of digest all the things that have happened’

ATLANTA — The mother of a Savannah police officer killed 22 years ago felt relief Wednesday after her son's convicted killer was executed, media reports suggest.
 
Troy Anthony Davis, 42, was executed by lethal injection at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson for the August 1989 shooting death of off-duty Savannah police Officer Mark Allen MacPhail. However, state officials put his execution on hold pending word from the Supreme Court.

Davis' execution has been previously postponed three times pending appeals. His supporters have organized countless vigils and marches, contending that he has been wrongly convicted, pointing to a number of prosecution witnesses who have recanted their testimony since his 1991 trial.
 
“Twenty-two years we've been going through this, and he is gone,” The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer quoted MacPhail's mother, Anneliese MacPhail, as saying. “11:08. … I really don't know what I'm going to do. I have to kind of digest all the things that have happened.”

Davis has maintained his innocence. Before he was executed, he told the MacPhail family: “I did not personally kill your son, father, brother,” according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
 
Davis, according to media accounts, told prison officials shortly before the execution: “For those about to take my life, may God have mercy on your souls. May God bless your souls.”
