Oconee County authorities nail mobile meth lab

Authorities in Oconee County today found a rolling meth lab following a traffic stop.

“It is a rolling meth lab or at least the components of one,” the office said in a statement on its Facebook page. “It all resulted from a traffic stop.”

The meth lab was in a pickup truck that authorities stopped around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, the Athens Banner-Herald newspaper reported on its website. One person was arrested, but the suspect’s name was not immediately released, according to the report.

“It has been confirmed positive for methamphetamine and the individual has been taken into custody,” the newspaper quoted Chief Deputy Lee Weems as saying. “The investigation is continuing and will be for sometime.”

After determining the truck contained a lab, deputies called in fire authorities to help with the cleanup.

Because of the obvious dangers associated with transporting volatile chemicals, rolling meth labs have troubled authorities nationwide for years. Makers of meth generally opt to go with the mobile labs to avoid detection by authorities.
