Gwinnett authorities investigating inmate’s death

Gwinnett County authorities are investigating the death of a 26-year-old man who died while in a holding cell of the Gwinnett County Jail.

According to the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department, Quincy William Franklin was brought to the jail at about midnight on Saturday. Franklin was arrested Friday night in DeKalb County on a probation violation.

“Mr. Franklin was placed in a holding cell with two other inmates in admissions,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “At 12:37 p.m., Mr. Franklin was still snoring loudly in a holding cell with two other inmates. At 12:52 p.m., deputies came to remove one of those inmates to be processed and Mr. Franklin could not be awakened and was not responsive.”

Jail officials called medical personnel. “Franklin was given CPR and an ambulance transported him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead,” the sheriff’s office said.

Officials on Monday performed an autopsy. The results of the autopsy are pending toxicology results.
