Suspected Athens cop killer surrenders to authorities

A suspected cop killer surrendered to authorities in Athens late Friday night, bringing a three-day manhunt to an end.

Jamie Hood, 33, faces murder and other charges in a Tuesday shooting that left one police officer dead and a second wounded, various media reported.

“I want to personally thank every Law Enforcement Officer and Agency that assisted our department in bringing some closure to this tragic event,” Athens-Clarke County police wrote on their Facebook page. “I would also like to thank the citizens and business community for all they have done and provided for us during the past week. Thank You!”

Before surrendering on live television, authorities said Hood took eight hostages, according to a number of media reports. Authorities went on television to assure Hood that he wouldn’t be harmed if he surrendered.

A memorial service for the fallen officer — Elmer “Buddy” Christian — is scheduled for Sunday.
