GBI: Commerce officer arrested for running vehicle license plate for personal reasons

A Northeast Georgia police officer is accused of running a vehicle license plate through a state database for personal reasons, the GBI said.

GBI agents on Tuesday arrested Commerce police Officer Matthew Scott Rogers, 44, and charged him with one count of criminal liability and penalties of crimes of computers, a felony.

“The arrest was in connection with Officer Rogers running a tag through the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) for personal reasons which violate the laws governing the use of GCIC,” the GBI said in a statement.

Rogers was booked into the Jackson County Jail. He was subsequently released on $2,000 bond.

The state investigation, which remains ongoing, began on Feb. 17 at the behest of Commerce Police Chief John Gaissert. Rogers is currently on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of a Commerce Police Department internal administrative review, according to the GBI.
