Isakson: Make March 30 ‘Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day’

U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., has co-sponsored a resolution declaring March 30 — the 38th anniversary of the day that combat and combat support units withdrew completely from South Vietnam — as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.”

“The brave Americans who served our country in Vietnam deserve recognition and gratitude for their sacrifices,” Isakson, a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, said in a news release. “I honor our veterans every day, and I am pleased to cosponsor legislation that designates a special day to remember Vietnam veterans. I hope that citizens across the country will join me in commemorating ‘Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.'”

More than 58,000 American soldiers were killed and an additional 300,000 wounded during the Vietnam War. Troops withdrew from Vietnam following the Treaty of Paris.

U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., introduced the legislation. In addition to Isakson, Sens. John Boozman, R-Ark., Thad Cochran, R-Miss., and James Inhofe, R-Okla., co-sponsored the measure.
