Convicted murdered faces Tuesday execution

A convicted murderer is schedule to be executed on Tuesday at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson.

Emmanuel Hammond was sentenced to death in 1990 for the murder of 27-year old Julie Love in Fulton County. If executed, Hammond would be the 26th inmate put to death by lethal injection in Georgia.

For his last meal, Hammond requested fried chicken, French fries, corn on the cob, jalapeno peppers, mint chocolate chip ice cream and cherry limeade, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1973, 48 men have been executed in Georgia. Currently, there are 102 men and one woman on Georgia’s death row.

On Friday, a judge postponed a decision on Hammond’s request for a stay of execution, instead scheduling a hearing for Monday morning, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Also on Friday, the Georgia Board of Paroles and Paroles denied Hammond’s request for clemency, WAGA-TV reported.

Media witnesses for the execution are: Greg Bluestein of The Associated Press, Andrew Holt of the Atlanta Jewish Times and Josh Green of the Gwinnett Daily Post.
