Republicans make a ‘pledge’

House Republicans on Thursday rolled out their “Pledge to America” – an agenda for how the GOP plans to govern that includes tax cuts, shrinking the federal government and repealing the controversial health care bill that President Obama signed into law six months ago today.

“House Republicans take this Pledge to America and will focus on smaller, less costly government and advance specific plans to create jobs, cut wasteful Washington spending and reform the way Congress does business,” U.S. Rep. Tom Graves, R-Ga., said in a statement.

“The Pledge is truly the work product of the American people,” U.S. Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., said in a statement. “In it, we pledge to encourage job creation and free enterprise, define and follow a path to a balanced budget, fix the dysfunction in Congress, repeal and replace ObamaCare and protect our citizens and borders.”

Republicans offered their proposal less than six weeks before November’s elections. The plan was offered in a similar fashion to one the GOP released leading up to the 1994 election, which saw Republicans take control of Congress.

“In town hall meetings, events here in Georgia and even trips to the grocery store, I’ve heard from everyday Georgians frustrated with an out-of-touch government,” U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., said in a statement. “Washington has focused on government takeovers, bailouts, and massive new regulatory regimes while the American people are looking for action to create jobs and get our economy back on its feet. Washington has been out of step with America.

“The Pledge offers a new approach – one that started with the people and which reflects their greatest concerns. With it and with the people, we can right the ship and get our government back on track,” Kingston added.
