Atlanta dodges snow bullet; milk, bread flies off the shelves

ATLANTA – Metro Atlanta for the most part dodged a winter weather bullet, but that didn’t keep motorists from getting an early start on rush hour and making a run on grocery stores.

“Atlanta city officials are continuing to monitor the freezing rain and sleet conditions,” the city said in a statement. “The City’s Department of Public Works will begin pre-treating bridges and overpasses shortly after midnight Wednesday.”

Still, a number of school systems throughout the northern half of the state closed early because of the weather threat, and a number of systems cancelled classes for tomorrow.

Some roads were expected to freeze overnight, but expected winds might help avoid the widespread freezing of roads throughout Metro Atlanta.

Meanwhile, one Atlanta resident described the milk and bread sections of a local grocery store as “depleted.”

“It was slower than usual at 6 p.m., but then I walked by the dairy case and realized why,” one Atlanta shopper said. “It’s obvious everyone had been there earlier, purchasing milk and bread.”
