Authorities: Bank robber escapes with 3-year-old in getaway car

SMYRNA, Ga. – Local and federal authorities arrested one man and continue to look for a second in connection with the Thursday robbery of a Smyrna bank.

Police say a black man with a handgun entered the Regions Bank on Concord Road and demanded money. He left with “a large sum of cash” and fled the scene in a grey Dodge Avenger along with a second man and a 3-year-old girl in the back seat, the FBI said.

Smyrna police stopped the car a few miles away after the three fled south along South Cobb Drive. However, officers only found the driver, identified as 35-year-old Cornell Brumfield, and the 3-year-old girl in the car.
So, police had the car towed to the Smyrna Police Department. As a wrecker crew dropped off the car, the second man – identified as 35-year-old Ron Darnell Sterling – jumped from the trunk and fled, according to authorities.

Brumfield is currently in federal custody, and police continue to look for Sterling, a 5-foot, 6-inch tall black man who weighs approximately 140 pounds. Authorities believe the Tylertown, Miss., man remains in the Metro Atlanta area. He faces an armed robbery charge.
