WASHINGTON, Jan. 4, 2007 – Nancy Pelosi made history today when she was became the first woman elected as Speaker of the House.
“I accept this gavel in the spirit of partnership, not partisanship, and look forward to working with you on behalf of the American people,” said Pelosi, D-Calif.
“In this House, we may belong to different parties, but we serve one country. We stand united in our pride and prayers for our men and women in the armed forces. They are working together to protect America, and we, in this House, must also work together to build a future worthy of their sacrifice.
In November, Democrats reclaimed a majority in Congress for the first time in 12 years.
“I had planned on being in the minority and playing defense when I first ran for Congress in 1994,” said Rep. Charlie Norwood, R-Ga. “Now 13 years later I’ll finally be doing what I originally thought would be the case.”
